Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.
